The leaves are turning. A chill is in the air. Halloween is here. Our favorite sports time of the year may be March, but this fall has been particularly interesting. The staff at SweatBeads has complied the following list of sports stories. What’s on yours?

10. High School Football – the youngsters move from regular season to their typical class state playoff formats, with perennial favorites like De La Salle High School (Concord, California) chasing a title. Who will win in your backyard?

9. College Football – the early season cup cakes are behind us, and we now approach the conference races and classic rival match ups. Forget the BCS and the endless Bowl Season. Why can’t College Football take a clue from the NCAA Basketball committee? Same reason Health Care Reform won’t happen – corporate sponsorship and lobbyists.

8. World Cup Soccer – the US Men are currently ranked #11 in the world and recently pulled off upsets over #1 Spain, Italy, and led Brazil 2-0 before falling 3-2. Big expectations for 2010 in South Africa.

7. World Gymnastics – Bridget Sloan of tiny Pittsboro, IN wins the 2009 World Gymnastics Championships and becomes 1 of 5 American women in history to be crowned World Champion!

6. NASCAR Chase Cup – Brian France at NASCAR understands the appeal of a playoff system (and big name sponsorships). Can anyone catch Jimmie Johnson?

5. Tiger – Presidents Cup, 5-0. FedEx Cup, 17 events. 14 top 10′s. $10M Bonus for winning the playoff. PGA Tour, $10.5M winnings in 18 events. What I love about this guy? Yeah, he made $20M in winnings. But he WON – week in and week out. No guaranteed contracts for dismal performance and whining. He’s simply the best.

4. NFL mid Season – the waste of a preseason is behind us and the conference races are taking shape. Favre finally succumbed this week. Congrats to the Bronchos and Kyle Orton – sometimes we all need a fresh start. Does it look like Indianapolis and New Orleans this year?

3. College Basketball Opens – Midnight Madness was on a Friday night 2 weeks ago around college campuses. 13,000+ kids show up to kickoff the hoops season at schools like IU, North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, etc. We’re looking forward to March Madness and the Final Four in Indianapolis in 2010. Will the Boilers make the short drive to Indy?

2. Ski Season Anticipation – People head to the gym (yoga, cycling, stairs) Warren Miller’s latest Masterpiece – Dynasty – and the latest ski technology advancements – all pique our collective anxiety for the first big snowfall of the year. El Nino? Bring it on!

1. MLB World Series – Philly vs. The Yanks. Baseball’s season is long but the playoffs are short and spirited. Steroids nearly wrecked A-Rod’s season, now he’s unstoppable. Anyone gotta clean pee cup? Yanks in 6.

We at SweatySports hope you and yours are enjoying the fall sports season.

Some sports movies inspire. Others stir the emotions. Some are just funny as hell. Here’s SweatBeads Top 10 Sports Movies of All Time:

10. Miracle (2004) – the underdog 1980 US Olympic Hockey team rises up to beat the dominant Soviets in dramatic fashion. Coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) is a masterful coach and motivator. He’s despised but respected by his players. I remember watching the actual game – we ran into the streets celebrating.

9. Seabiscuit (2003) – “the long shot becomes a legend”, the undersized depression era horse shocks the establishment and becomes a rally cry for a troubled nation. Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper do an admirable job of portraying jockey, trainer, and owner mending their own life’s challenges through a relationship with a horse.

8. Jerry McGuire (1996) – “show me the money!!!” Tom Cruise as a sports agent with a moral compass, and his relationship with his lone client Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.). Rene Zellweger’s great line “you had me at hello..” Even the women like this one.

7. Rudy (1993) – true life story of Daniel “Rudy” Reuttiger, a blue collar kid with dreams to play football for Notre Dame. He’s small, slow, and his grades aren’t great. This story is of how Rudy beats the odds and gets in the last game of his final season, and sacks the opposing quarterback to cheers from the stadium fans!

6. Breaking Away (1979) – True life story of Indiana University’s famed annual Little 500 cycling race and how the Cutters, a team of locals, beat the favored fraternities. Factoid: in 2004, the 25th anniversary of the film, the Cutters again won, beating out ATO. The film won an Oscar for Best Screenplay and featured Dennis Quaid.

5. Brian’s Song (1971) – all Chicago Bears fans shed a tear when watching the true life story of Brian Piccolo’s (James Caan) fight with cancer and the inter racial friendship he formed with Gale Sayers (Billie Dee Williams). Great line by Sayers while accepting the NFL’s Most Courageous Player award “I love Brian Piccolo, and I’d like all of you to love him. When you hit your knees to pray tonight, please ask God to love him, too.” Grown men do cry.

4. Field of Dreams (1989) – “If you build it, he will come” Kevin Costner plays an Iowa farmer who hears whispers of how he can reconnect with his deceased father. Surprise! The 1919 Chicago White Sox, maligned for throwing the World Series, show up and teach Costner a few lessons.

3. Caddyshack (1980) – A cult classic before Tiger made golf mainstream. Great quotes – Chevy Chase informing Bill Murray there’s a “pool in the front, and a pond in the back”, Rodney Dangerfield telling Ted Knight’s wife “…she must’ve been something before electricity” or Chevy Chase asking Danny the Caddie “do you do drugs Danny?” Danny replies, “everyday.” Chase asks, “then what’s the problem?” Oh yeah, there’s a little golf grudge match that goes the way of the underdogs.

2. Bull Durham (1988) – Costner and baseball movies. Great dialogue and sexual tension between Costner, playing Crash Davis – an aging career-minor-leaguer, and Susan Sarandon – as Annie Savoy – a slightly askew baseball groupie. Tim Robbins plays a spirited, naive Ebby Calvin “Nuke” LaLoosh – headed to “the show”. Sarandon “hooks up” with Robbins for the season and instructs him “breathe through your eye-lids”. A solid romantic, sentimental ending.

1. Hoosiers (1986) – a true life story of how tiny Milan (enrollment 161) beats larger Muncie Central for the Boys State Basketball title. True Hoosiers know the story – Indiana held a single-class tournament where all schools competed for the same championship in one of America’s largest and most popular high school tournaments until the controversial separation into enrollment classes in 1997. Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper give memorable performances with many scenes being shot in rural gymnasiums still found throughout Indiana.
